Why HubSpot Professional can be cheaper than Starter now

    6 min read·Last verified 3 October 2026

When you compare HubSpot Starter vs Professional cost on the new pricing, Professional can come out cheaper for email-heavy teams. Starter can't buy email packs, so its emails are paid at credit rates, while Professional can cover them with a pack at a lower cost per email. By our calculation, four users sending 10,000 emails a month pay €1,530 on Starter and €1,240 on Professional.

This is one of the quirks of HubSpot's new pricing model for new customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Prices below come from HubSpot's Flexible Seats-and-Credits Pricing supplement, as published on 2 October 2026.

    Meet the team

A business in France is new to HubSpot. It has:

    • 4 users, all needing Core Seats
    • 5,000 records
    • 10,000 emails a month
    • No need for workflows, sequences or Front Office seats

On features alone, Starter looks like enough. So let's price both.

Pricing it on Starter (our calculation)

    Seats: 4 Core Seats × €20 = €80 a month.

Records: 5,000 is well inside Starter's 25,000 record capacity. No extra cost.

Email: Starter can't buy email packs, so every email beyond the included credits uses capacity packs.

    • 10,000 emails × 15 credits = 150,000 credits.
    • Starter includes 5,000 credits a month.
    • That leaves 145,000 credits to buy: 145 capacity packs at €10 = €1,450.

    Starter total: €80 + €1,450 = €1,530 a month.

Pricing it on Professional (our calculation)

    Seats: 4 Core Seats × €60 = €240 a month.

Records: 5,000 is well inside Professional's 250,000 record capacity.

Email: Professional can buy email packs. The 10,000-send pack costs €1,000 a month and covers all 10,000 emails.

    Professional total: €240 + €1,000 = €1,240 a month.

And because the pack covers the email, Professional's 10,000 included credits stay free for other things, assuming pack sends are used first. HubSpot hasn't confirmed the order of consumption; that's our reading.

HubSpot Starter vs Professional cost, side by side

Starter and Professional monthly cost for four Core users sending 10,000 emails (our calculation)
    Starter Professional
    Seats €80 €240
    Email €1,450 (145 capacity packs) €1,000 (10,000-send pack)
    Total / month €1,530 €1,240
Workflows, sequences, custom reporting No Yes
Front Office seats available No Yes

Professional costs less and includes more features.

    Why this happens

    Three rules combine:

    1. Email is expensive at credit rates. The first 10,000 emails a month use 15 credits each, which is €0.15 per email at credit prices (our calculation).
    2. Email packs are cheaper. The 10,000-send pack works out at €0.10 per email (our calculation).
    3. Starter can't buy email packs. They're Professional and Enterprise only.

Even on Professional, the pack beats credits for this team. Without it, 150,000 credits minus 10,000 included would mean 140 capacity packs, or €1,400, compared with €1,000 for the pack (our calculation).

    When Starter still wins

This doesn't mean everyone should jump to Professional. For light email use, Starter remains the cheaper choice.

Take three Core users in Sweden with 2,000 records sending 1,000 emails a month. On Starter that's €60 in seats plus 10 capacity packs (€100) for the 10,000 credits beyond the included 5,000: €160 a month (our calculation). Professional seats alone for three users would be €180.

The tipping point depends on your seat count and email volume, so it's worth running your own numbers. More seats push the balance towards Starter, because a Professional Core Seat costs three times as much as a Starter one. More email pushes it towards Professional, because every extra email on Starter is paid at credit rates while a Professional pack absorbs it.

What else you get on Professional

Price isn't the only difference. Moving up from Starter changes the limits as well as the features:

Starter and Professional included limits on HubSpot's new pricing
    Starter Professional
    Included credits / month 5,000 10,000
Record capacity (all objects) 25,000 250,000
    Calling minutes / month 500 3,000
    Dashboards 30 350
    Pipelines 15 350
Front Office seats Not available Available
Email and workflow packs No Yes

Professional also adds workflows (up to 2,000), sequences, custom objects, custom reporting, calculated properties, teams, a knowledge base, multi-touch attribution and call transcription. If any of these are on your roadmap, factor them in now rather than at your first upgrade.

When Starter isn't an option at all

Sometimes the comparison never starts, because Starter can't do the job:

    • More than 10 users. Starter is capped at 10 paid seats. A team of 12 that needs only Core access pays 12 × €60 = €720 a month on Professional (our calculation).
    • Front Office seats. Starter has none, so customer-facing teams that need the dedicated workspaces need Professional or Enterprise.
    • Workflows, sequences, custom objects or custom reporting. All are Professional and Enterprise only.

And the same logic can run one step further up. Because Enterprise includes 15,000,000 records against Professional's 250,000, a large database can make Enterprise cheaper than Professional. Our guide to record capacity works through an example.

    A caveat on the maths

HubSpot hasn't confirmed two things that affect these calculations:

    • Whether email credit bands are graduated. In this example all 10,000 emails fall in the first band, so it doesn't matter here.
    • The order in which packs, included credits and purchased credits are used.

Our calculator also assumes extra credits are bought in whole 1,000-credit packs. These are our reading, not HubSpot's confirmation. See the tracker of what HubSpot has and hasn't confirmed for open questions.

Questions to ask before choosing Starter

    1. How many emails will we send a month, of every type? Internal notifications, meeting reminders and survey emails all count. See what a HubSpot email costs now.
    2. Will we pass 10 users in the next year?
    3. Does anyone need customer-facing workspaces?
    4. Will we need workflows soon? Moving up later changes every seat price in the account, because one edition applies to everyone.
    5. What happens if credits run out mid-month? On Starter, without extra credits, email sends pause.

    What to do with this

Price both editions, not just the one that looks right on features. The five setups in HubSpot's new pricing: five setups priced include this team, priced on every edition by our engine.

    Frequently asked questions

Can HubSpot Professional really cost less than Starter?

Yes, for some teams. By our calculation, four Core users sending 10,000 emails a month pay €1,530 on Starter and €1,240 on Professional, because Professional can buy a 10,000-send email pack.

Why can't Starter buy email packs?

HubSpot's supplement lists email and workflow packs as Professional and Enterprise only.

    When is Starter still cheaper?

For light email use. By our calculation, three Core users sending 1,000 emails a month pay €160 on Starter.

Does Professional include anything extra in this example?

Yes. Professional includes workflows, sequences, custom reporting and Front Office seats, and 10,000 included credits instead of 5,000.

What if my team has more than 10 users?

Starter is capped at 10 paid seats, so you need Professional or Enterprise. By our calculation, 12 Core users on Professional cost €720 a month in seats, based on HubSpot's supplement as published on 2 October 2026.
